| We present high resolution K-band spectra of two black hole X-ray binaries (BH-XRBs), GRS 1915+105 and V404 Cyg, as a test of the standard evolutionary scenario for BH-XRBs. This is the first qualitative abundance analysis of the secondary stars in long-period BH-XRBs compared to standard giants with differing 12CO to 13CO ratio. We examine the relative abundances of CNO elements using CN, 12CO, and 13CO features as well as various other lines. We aim to determine whether the secondaries are affected by the formation of the black hole, whether they efficiently accrete supernova ejecta, or whether high mass black holes grow at the expense of their secondary stars. Our observations are key to understanding high mass binary star evolution as well as the production of the most massive stellar black holes. |
